He was in his early teens during World War II and was profoundly affected by the war. He had served in the Hitler Youth and had been sent to defend the western front during the final months of the war.

Born in 1929, Habermas grew up in Germany and did not become radicalized till the late 1950’s. He joined the institute in 1956 and worked as Adorno’s assistant.
